Duncan is located right in the heart of the Cowichan Valley. Duncan itself is poised for some real growth. In 2008 & 2009 several big box stores went up in the North part of town as well as a bunch of reconstructing and building in the center of Duncan as well. There's also the new Vancouver Island University that is under way as I write this (early 2010). It will be located just off the highway and Beverly Street right in Duncan.
In and around the Duncan area, you can enjoy a leisurely trip on an inner tube down the historic Cowichan River or rent a sea kayak in Maple Bay or Genoa Bay for a relaxing paddle in the ocean. The sea life and scenery is second to none and there are lots of bald eagles to be seen as well. There's a great little restaurant in Genoa Bay right on the water called the Genoa Bay Café. The food is excellent!
There's some great fishing in the Cowichan River and there are also several fantastic locations to find swimming holes on the Cowichan River too. Just ask the locals where the hot spots are. Some of the key swimming holes are named "Paradise, Gwenn's, the S Pools, Vimy, Stoltz's Pools, and Canyon" just to name a few. The water is a deep green color in the summer and it really feels like you've just experienced a little bit of heaven.
The Cowichan Valley is just a little warmer than its' surrounding counterparts and has been dubbed "The Warmland".
